Understanding Scoliosis: The Importance of Early Detection, Timely Treatment, and Better Quality of Life

Scoliosis is a medical condition in which the spine curves abnormally to the side, forming an “S” or “C” shape. It most commonly affects children and adolescents during growth spurts but can also occur in adults. While it may begin with subtle signs, if left untreated, scoliosis can lead to long-term physical and emotional challenges 1 .

According to Dr. Arvind Sharma, Neurosurgeon and Dr Avtar Singh Balawat, Orthopedic Surgeon, at SMS Hospital, Jaipur, “Raising awareness about scoliosis is crucial for early detection, effective treatment, and better management of the condition. Detecting scoliosis in children is especially important, as the spine changes shape rapidly during a child’s growth spurt. If identified early, it can be managed effectively, preventing long-term effects on the child’s growth, physical health, and mental well-being. Early screening plays a key role in timely detection.”

Common signs and symptoms of scoliosis include uneven shoulders or waist, one hip higher
than the other, prominent ribs on one side, a visible curve in the spine, and in adults, persistent back pain may also be present. Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination and imaging tests such as X-rays, which provide detailed views of the spine’s curvature.

Treatment approaches vary based on the severity of the curvature, patient age, and overall
health. For mild cases, observation with regular monitoring may be sufficient to prevent
progression. Bracing is often recommended for children and adolescents with moderate curves to stop further development. Physical therapy involving exercises and stretches can help improve posture, strengthen muscles, and relieve discomfort. In severe cases, spinal fusion surgery may be necessary to correct the curvature and stabilise the spine.

Dr. Arvind Sharma adds, “Technological advances like navigation and intraoperative neuromonitoring have made deformity correction surgery safer. For many patients, scoliosis
surgery leads to significant pain relief, improved posture, and better respiratory function. These changes can dramatically improve day-to-day living, allowing people to move more freely and regain confidence in their physical abilities.”

Dr. Avtar Singh Balawat adds, “Post-surgery, patients also report better digestion, improved balance, and greater psychological well-being. When considered at the right time and performed with appropriate safeguards, scoliosis surgery offers long-term benefits that far outweigh the risks.”

Raising awareness about scoliosis enables early detection and ensures individuals receive timely and appropriate treatment. By understanding the symptoms, causes, and available treatment options, patients and caregivers can take proactive steps to manage the condition effectively and achieve the best possible outcomes.
