Grow Further is a nonprofit organization based in Seattle, Washington USA that makes grants to agricultural innovations relevant to smallholder farmers and other populations at risk of food insecurity. They are a privately funded public charity spread globally. Their mission is to unleash the power of individuals to advance global food security. Food implies both food for human and feed for animals- a clarification which we sought before preparing our grant application.
Our planned efforts is likely to a) enrich farmers, b) create wealth by better milch animal nutrition resulting in higher productivity, c) possibly by feed-stock of Biodiesel and d) reduce global warming (30 Tons/acre/Year of Net Carbon dioxide Sequestered) and attract future global investments in Moringa & Camelina.
“Moringa”, is a multi-purpose shrub/tree as it is rich in protein, minerals and vitamins, and produce green fodder. It is fast growing deep rooted plant tolerant to drought conditions. It has potential to produce enormous biomass and promises to be the plant of the future in ensuring year round green fodder availability for animals.
Camelina is cultivated worldwide as a rotational oilseed crop under a range of agronomic and environmental conditions. In recent years, interest in Camelina has increased due to its short vegetation season, modest agricultural and environmental requirements for cultivation, high seed and biomass (straw) yield, high seed oil content, high polyunsaturated fatty acids content in the oil, and multiple uses. Based on the bioactive constituents of the meal, and the lignocellulosic content of straw, the Camelina plant can be utilized in the animal feed industries.
