Keep an alert on your eye: Conjunctivitis on the rise

There has been an outbreak on the conjunctivitis cases with 70% rise over last 2-3 weeks, especially in children, raising an alarm about monsoon-related diseases. Easing of social distance measures, non-use of masks and decrease in safe practices like hand washing has also lead to this sudden spike of infections. Conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye, is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, which is the thin clear tissue that lies over the white part of the eye and lines the inside of the eyelid. While everyone can contract this eye disease, children are particularly prone to it. It can be highly contagious, however, taking proper care and following the doctor’s recommendations can prevent its spread with no long-term problems. This infection occurs mainly due to the change in weather and is caused by bacteria or viruses, says Dr Neeraj Shah.

Symptoms of Conjunctivitis includes Swelling of the eyelids, Redness in the white area of
the eye or inner eyelid, Foreign body sensation in the eyes etc.

Avoid crowded and closed spaces, avoid touching anything in public areas, adopt frequent
hand washing and use of hand sanitizers, change your pillowcases often and don’t share eye cosmetics or personal eye care itemsto prevent Conjunctivitis.

Tips to follow if you have conjunctivitis
Consult an ophthalmologist if you have any of the symptoms. Avoid over counter medication or home remedies. Don’t put a patch over your eye as it may worsen the infection. Wash your hands after application of eye drops or after touching your eyes. There is a misconception that you can contract the disease by looking at a conjunctivitis infected person. This is not true, as this disease is spread only through body and fluid contacts. Consulting a doctor is the right thing to do in case you are uncertain about what to do when you are contracted by an infection, adds Dr Neeraj Shah.
